Metro Vancouver’s initiative, The National Zero Waste Council, is at the forefront of transitioning Canada towards a circular economy. It works to bring together government agencies, businesses and NGOs on waste prevention strategies that support economic opportunities.

Metro Vancouver works with water, liquid waste and solid waste, along with regional parks, planning and climate change departments. Their aim is to engage with their stakeholders around the concept of the circular economy and how it can be applied to the work of Metro Vancouver. I was commissioned to create key graphics to help key circular economy basics in this edition of their Circular Economy Business Toolkit.

My contribution was specifically requested due to my pre-existing experience and skills around sustainability and the circular economy so as to ensure accurate and informed creation and adaptations of these complex topic areas.

Along with the basics of linear vs circular economy, the council also wished to include an interpretation of the Ellen MacArthur butterfly diagram to show the biological and technical loops as it pertains to food, linear and solid waste in their system. Additionally, it was important to include graphics that speak to the economic opportunity and value to make the business case for sustainability.

The goal was to use these graphics in presenting opportunities to develop policies around procurement and encourage municipal members to create economic development strategies in order to support the business community to further engage in the circular economy.
